Adapting Content

A major benefit of adopting is that you can customize the materials for your institution, within the bounds of each course's license.

Fork, then customize

When you fork a course's public student-materials repository, you get your own copy you can change freely while still pulling updates from the original:

  • Adjust datasets, examples, or context to fit your students
  • Add or remove assignments to match your term length
  • Keep your changes separate from the upstream materials

Stay inside the license

What you may modify or redistribute depends on the license attached to each piece of content. Read Understanding Licenses first, then check the license stated on your course page:

  • Content without an ND clause can be modified and redistributed (often with attribution and a non-commercial restriction).
  • Content with an ND (NoDerivatives) clause, such as some textbooks, can be used as-is but not modified or redistributed.

Test before you assign

Run any adapted notebook through the autograder yourself before assigning it. Changing a question can change the expected output the autograder checks against.
